Décolleté care: why the skin on your neck and chest needs a routine of its own

We moisturise our face, we moisturise our legs – and usually stop at the collarbone. Yet the skin on the décolleté, neck and chest is one of the most delicate areas on the whole body. It is thinner, drier and more often exposed to the sun than almost anywhere else. And it shows that earlier than most of us would like.

Why the skin on the décolleté is different

The skin on the décolleté is noticeably thinner than facial skin and has considerably fewer sebaceous glands. Sebum is what keeps skin supple and forms its natural protective layer. Where less of it is produced, skin loses moisture faster.

On top of that, there is very little fatty tissue beneath the skin here – it sits almost directly on the breastbone. That makes it mobile, but also prone to fine dryness lines: the crepey little creases that are sometimes visible in the morning after a night spent sleeping on your side.

What puts the most strain on this skin

  • Sun. The décolleté is called the sun terrace for a reason. In summer it is almost always uncovered – and still gets forgotten at the sunscreen stage.
  • Dry air. Central heating in winter, air conditioning in summer. Both draw moisture out of the skin.
  • Sleeping position. If you sleep on your side, the skin on your décolleté is compressed for several hours every night.
  • Friction. Bra straps, sportswear, coarse fabrics – anything that rubs puts extra strain on thin skin.
  • Shower habits. Very hot water and heavily foaming products strip oils from the skin.

How to tell your skin needs care

A few signs are fairly clear: your skin feels tight after showering. It feels rough when you run your hand over it. Fine lines are visible in the morning and fade over the course of the day. Or make-up and self-tanner settle unevenly in this area.

None of this is dramatic. They are signs that the skin is short on moisture – and that is exactly what a simple routine can change.

The routine: three steps, two minutes

1. Exfoliate regularly, but gently

Once or twice a week is enough. Exfoliating lifts away dead skin cells so that your care doesn't sit on top of a dry layer. One thing matters: work without pressure on the décolleté. The 2in1 AHA Body Scrub combines mechanical and chemical exfoliation, so you barely need any force.

2. Moisture on skin that is still damp

The most important step – and the one where timing counts. Apply your serum while your skin is still slightly damp after showering. That helps the moisture bind better. The Décolleté Serum with Hyaluronic Acid is made for exactly this: light texture, absorbs quickly, leaves no film under your clothes.

3. Seal and protect

In summer, sunscreen belongs on the décolleté every single day. In winter, a richer layer on top does no harm. And if you feel like it, add a little Golden Glow Oil on good days – pure pleasure, not a must.

Which ingredients actually make sense here

Hyaluronic acid binds water. It gets interesting when several molecule sizes are combined: long-chain hyaluronic acid sits on the surface of the skin and makes it look plumper straight away. Short-chain absorbs deeper and binds moisture there throughout the day.

Paracress (Acmella Oleracea) contains the natural active spilanthol. In cosmetics it is used for a visibly smoothed complexion. The effect is temporary and purely cosmetic.

Caffeine leaves a firmer skin feel and is therefore a frequent companion in body care.

Frequently asked questions

Isn't my face cream enough for the décolleté?
In principle you can carry it down – better than nothing, certainly. But products developed for the thin skin on the décolleté and chest are usually lighter and absorb faster. That is simply more practical when you want to get dressed afterwards.

When should I start?
As soon as you notice the skin there feeling tight. It is not a question of age, but of skin moisture.

How long until I notice something?
A moisture effect is felt quickly. For the skin to feel more even overall, give it a few weeks of regular use.

The short version

The skin on your décolleté is thinner and drier than the skin on your face – it doesn't need an elaborate routine, but it does need a regular one. Find more for neck, chest and body in our body care range.
